Behind on posting...

I have fallen a bit behind on the cake blog for good reason - the day after I made this cake I got engaged! It's been a fun and exciting time. This cake was made from a Wilton mold and was my first experience with Angel Food. I tried an Angel Food recipe that came out looking half like a wet kitchen sponge and half like cardboard. Needless to say, it ended up in the trash. I resorted to Pillsbury but the trials did not end there. Angel food is very hard to get out of the pan, and this pan makes it even more difficult. It ended up working with the help of my long, flexible spreader but it was not an easy cake to make. It was, however, very delicious!

Summer is Here

The weather is warm, we've been to the beach, and summer is finally beginning to feel like summer. This cake was a lot of fun to make. Hershey's chocolate cake and buttermilk frosting with Wilton colors. The sand is crushed graham cracker. This was my first time using my new half-ball pans and I think the beach ball came out pretty good. The pans came with a bunch of patterns for soccer balls, volleyballs, etc. but nothing for a beach ball so I freehanded it. Not bad...

Coming Soon...

Some very fun summer cakes coming in the next month or so. I have some new Wilton stuff that I can't wait to use. The first should be posted this weekend. Even more appropriate now that the weather is actually becoming more summer-like!

stars and stripes

This concept was inspired from a Flickr user and I would have liked to get the colors a bit darker but I need to replenish my color stash. In fact, the flash brightened them up a bit in this shot.

Father's Day

I am officially in love with Wilton after creating this cake. I love everything about it and I'm pretty sure it's the best so far. The colors are fabulous and the frosting tip used for the bag was a great way to give the cake texture. I almost skipped out on that and I'm so glad I didn't.

pepperoni and buttercream

For the pizza cake I continued with the use of candy clay to create the pepperonis and the cheese. I think I would like to try this cake again with frosting as cheese, just for comparison. The cake is chocolate, the first chocolate cake I have made from scratch. It came out wonderful and was very moist. It tasted delicious with the buttercream frosting.

Fun With Cupcakes

While making my next cake I had some extra batter and decided to make some cupcakes that I could use to try some frosting techniques with. I am still new to using buttercream frosting so I wanted to try some things I had seen in Wilton books and on websites. The thing I wanted to try most was creating flowers. They came out relatively well for my first attempt.
